Position: School Nurse

Reports to: Executive Director Qualifications Required:

· Registered Nurse with Bachelor’s of Science in nursing with licensure as Registered Nurse

· Public Health Nursing through the MN Board of Nursing

· Licensed as a School Nurse through the MN Department of Education.

 

Special Requirements:

· CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

· Registered Nurse License and Public Health Certificate (MN Board of Nursing)

· Minnesota School Nurse License

· Bloodborne pathogen training

· Hearing and Vision Screening training

· Medication Administration Training

Position Description:

The school nurse enhances the educational process by minimizing or removing health-related barriers to learning, while promoting a safe environment for all students.

 

Essential duties and Responsibilities:

 

· Assesses and supports individual student health needs: Develops, implements, and evaluates procedures and programs to assess the health status of students with disabilities including immediate and chronic health problems. Collaborates with students and parent(s)/guardian(s) to develop individual health plan (IHP) for students with chronic health concerns, as needed.

· Maintains health records and a system of documentation of student health office activities, administration of medication and specialized health care procedures for students.

· Participates is the special education team, completing the health portion of special education evaluations and Individual Education Plans: identifying students with disabilities who are at risk educationally through health appraisals, health histories, records and screening programs.

· Communicates with other health professionals, as needed, to secure proper documentation of current diagnosis and plan of care. Disseminates information to other staff members, on a need-to-know basis, to ensure student safety and accommodate student needs.

· Works collaboratively with special education social worker to assist students and families in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community resources.

· Delegates nursing functions to others and supervises activities based on student need and staff capabilities.

· Initiate, update, and periodically reviews student health records of students with disabilities following federal, state and district policies.

· Participates in professional development training; local, regional and state meetings.

· Creates a positive relationship with the customer to ensure the interaction the customer has with the district is an efficient and satisfying experience.

· Conduct other duties as assigned by the Director.
