  • Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience: Teaching experience preferred, but not required
  • Licenses: Valid Minnesota teacher certification required or willingness to obtain certification
  • Certification: ABS or ASD certified required

Job Duties:

Under the direction of the school administrator, the licensed special education teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; and functions as IEP manager to assigned students.

  • Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP
  • Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
  • Employ various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
  • Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals
  • Adhere to procedural requirements, including due process timelines, special education logs, lesson plan, etc.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student’s IEP
  • Serve as primary contact for the parent
  • Conduct special education evaluations and reevaluations
  • Develop FBA/BIPs as well as monitor, document, oversee student behavior both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Attend and participate in PLC meetings
  • Provide instructional direction to paraprofessional support staff: assigns activities, provides guidance and instructional oversight
  • Collaborate and consult with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers, etc.) regarding the needs of students; Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities
  • Provide professional expertise and assistance to individuals, other district staff, and the community concerning areas of instructional expertise/knowledge
  • Attend training sessions, conferences, seminars, district and departmental meetings
  • Keep abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies
  • Perform other comparable duties of a like or similar nature or other duties as assigned

Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:

  • Current knowledge of special education laws, rules and regulations and district policies and procedures; The ability to apply these to help insure District compliance
  • Skilled in administering, scoring and interpreting special education assessment tools and procedures
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, techniques, and approaches.
  • Knowledge of child development theories and development stages and needs
  • Knowledge of current trends, theories and technologies pertaining to learning and instruction
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures and techniques, test construction and evaluation methods
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies, techniques and interventions related to job assignment
  • The skill and ability to communicate – both orally and in writing
